Federal campaigns and committees must obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Similar to EIN numbers assigned to businesses and corporations, this nine-digit number is issued by the IRS for identification purposes. This number is required to open a campaign bank account.
- Even if a political organization does not have any employees, it still needs an EIN.
- Don’t apply for an EIN until your organization is legally formed.
Never open a political bank account under the name of an individual or with an individual’s Social Security Number. Always use the organization’s EIN.
