You can run political ads on Google, but the platform has strict policies and regulations for political ads. They have a list of requirements that the advertisers must follow for their ads to be approved.
Political ads are considered “electioneering communications” and are subject to the same rules as other electioneering communications. These include requirements that the ad must be authorized by a candidate and that the ad must include specific disclaimers.
Election ads can only be targeted by:
- Geographic location (except radius around a location)
- Age, gender
Contextual targeting options such as: ad placements, topics, keywords against sites, apps, pages and videos
Any individual or organization that purchases election advertising on Google or YouTube must be verified or authorized, confirming that they are a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. To avoid any delays in the verification process, start it as soon as you can.
